Their very own little flock
A tiny flock around the hem. Little sheep at the cuffs. Knit a sweater they can point to, talk about and wear—a playful countryside scene made in colours you chose just for them.
A 5-page English PDF with written, size-specific directions, separate colour charts for the sheep and fence, finished measurements, yarn quantities by colour, needle guidance and an abbreviation list.
Intermediate. This project combines knitting in the round with stranded colourwork, reading a colour chart, left- and right-leaning increases, sleeve decreases and ribbing. You should be comfortable carrying yarn behind the work and maintaining an even tension across the sheep motifs.
Worsted-weight yarn in four colours. Quantities are in yards and follow 0–3 months / 6–12 months / 18–24 months / 2T / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 years:
Needles: 5 mm / US 8, or size to obtain gauge, and 4.5 mm / US 7 (one size smaller) for ribbing. Use 40 cm / 16 in circulars for the main work and 23 cm / 9 in circulars or DPNs for sleeves. Tapestry needle, four markers plus a distinct beginning-of-round marker, and waste yarn to hold sleeves.
Gauge: 18 stitches × 26 rows = 10 cm / 4 in in stockinette. Sample: Malabrigo Worsted, 210 yd per 100 g.
Eight sizes, from 0–3 months through 10 years. The following are finished garment measurements in inches, in size order:

A little character in every colour
A row of sheep circles the body above a little fence. Smaller motifs return near the cuffs, tying the playful border into the whole sweater.
The colourwork is concentrated near the hem and sleeves. Above it, stockinette gives the main colour room to shine—whether you choose a quiet neutral, a deep blue or another favourite shade.
Know the construction, chart work and size before choosing your yarn.
Follow size-specific written directions for the raglan, body and sleeves. Separate sheep and fence charts show where the contrast colours change.
Begin at the ribbed neck, increase through the raglan yoke, then hold the sleeves while knitting the body. Return to each sleeve and finish with ribbed cuffs.
The PDF gives a separate allowance for the main colour and each of the three contrast colours, so you can plan the flock and grassy border before you shop.
From neckline to little grassy hem
The top-down construction lets you see the sweater take shape before the colourwork begins. Sleeve stitches wait on waste yarn while the body continues in the round.
The sheep chart repeats around the body, followed by the fence and green lower border. Read the chart repeat for your chosen size; the sleeve motifs use their own size-specific arrangement.

Plan the flock before you cast on
Use the main shade for the sky-like upper body, a light colour for the sheep, a dark contrast for their faces and legs, and a fourth colour for the lower border.
Swatch the colourwork as well as the plain fabric. Keep carried strands relaxed so the motif band remains comfortable and does not pull in.
Use worsted-weight yarn. Quantities below follow the eight sizes in order: 0–3m / 6–12m / 18–24m / 2T / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 years.
Main: 100 / 115 / 140 / 160 / 185 / 210 / 250 / 280 yd.
Contrast 1: 20 / 21 / 22 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 yd.
Contrast 2: 10 / 10 / 11 / 11 / 12 / 14 / 15 / 18 yd.
Contrast 3: 70 / 80 / 100 / 110 / 125 / 145 / 170 / 190 yd.
5 mm / US 8 for the main fabric; 4.5 mm / US 7 for ribbing, or sizes needed for gauge.
40 cm / 16 in circulars for the main work, and 23 cm / 9 in circulars or DPNs for sleeves. Tapestry needle, four markers plus a distinct beginning-of-round marker, and waste yarn.
18 stitches × 26 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in stockinette.
The sample uses Malabrigo Worsted, 210 yd per 100 g. Keep colourwork floats relaxed so the sheep band can stretch comfortably.

Intermediate. This project combines knitting in the round with stranded colourwork, reading a colour chart, left- and right-leaning increases, sleeve decreases and ribbing. You should be comfortable carrying yarn behind the work and maintaining an even tension across the sheep motifs.
The sweater is worked top-down in the round. The body and sleeves are not knitted as separate flat pieces. Finish by weaving in the yarn ends and blocking the sweater as desired.
Choose a worsted-weight yarn that gives 18 stitches and 26 rows per 4 inches in stockinette. Swatch the stranded section too: the floats affect stretch and fabric. Keep a clear contrast between the sheep and their background.
